What Is DHI Hair Transplantation? Technique, Benefits, and Results

What Is Hair Transplantation with the DHI Method?

DHI Hair Transplantation (Direct Hair Implantation) refers to the method of directly implanting hair follicles. In this technique, grafts are extracted using a special tool called a Choi pen, which is operated only by experienced professionals. The same pen is then used to implant the follicles directly into the scalp without making incisions or opening channels. In traditional techniques, extraction and implantation are performed separately, but with the Choi pen, these steps are combined into one. This provides both efficiency and greater comfort for the patient. In summary, while the FUE technique involves three steps, DHI is completed in two. The goal is to enhance the quality of the transplant, achieve a denser and more natural look, preserve existing hair, avoid shaving, and enable a quicker return to daily life.

Who Is a Good Candidate for DHI Hair Transplantation? Am I Suitable for DHI?

DHI is suitable for individuals experiencing hair loss and looking to increase hair density. However, a proper evaluation by a qualified specialist is necessary to determine suitability. Generally, suitable candidates for DHI include:

  • Those with mild to severe hair loss,
  • Individuals with healthy hair follicles,
  • People in good overall health,
  • Candidates who are informed and have realistic expectations about the procedure.

How Is the DHI Technique Performed?

In the DHI method, hair follicles are collected using the Choi pen and implanted directly into the scalp with the same tool. The procedure consists of three main stages:

  1. The donor area is numbed with local anesthesia, allowing for comfortable graft extraction. Then, follicles are collected using the Choi pen, and implantation begins.
  2. The extracted follicles are inserted directly into the scalp at the correct angle using the fine-tipped Choi pen. This tool is designed to hold and insert individual follicles precisely.
  3. After the procedure, the healing phase begins. Follow-up appointments are scheduled, and patients are given detailed aftercare instructions.

Because this technique avoids damaging healthy tissue and allows for dense implantation, it offers significant advantages.

One of the key benefits is that the follicles are implanted immediately after extraction, reducing waiting time and increasing graft survival. Although the method has existed for years, it has become much more popular in recent times.

The procedure lasts approximately 7–9 hours and should be performed by experienced professionals.

What Are the Advantages of DHI Hair Transplantation?

  • Simultaneous channel opening and follicle implantation allow for immediate placement, minimizing graft exposure.
  • Enables denser and more natural-looking results.
  • The special pen minimizes graft waiting time, reducing the risk of follicle loss.
  • Existing hair is preserved; it can be performed even if hair loss is ongoing.
  • Patients experience a faster and smoother recovery process.
